Desert Eagle thats one big assed pistol. Made by some bad assed hebrew. The Desert Eagle is chambered in .50 cal. same as the Browning .50 cal Heavy Machine gun. Serving since my granddad was getting out of short pants. Not sure if we can thank the HEB for this one, but it is one bad assed pistol.

A BAR is a Browning Automatic Rifle. It was used quite a bit in WWII. Big fan of James McMurtry. I’ve seen him a couple of times and he puts on a great show.

McMurtry introduces it as a “little song about the North Texas-Southern Oklahoma Crystal Methamphetamine Industry.

Did you listen to the track?!? It’s a 12 string guitar dumb -ass. You can’t see the bottom 2 strings or the rest of the strings because of the resolution.

I have 99% of the same views as James, and it sounds like you do as well.

James uses Progressive themes in his music, and espouses a lot of what I’d consider “Social Democratic” ideals. Good for him. He’s got my business every time he comes to town or puts out a new release.

I don’t get a social message from this song. I see it as McMurtry taking a jaundiced view of his surroundings.

IMHO, Southern boys are a lot “easier” with violence and lawlessness than the average citizen. That’s all.

It is my opinion that much of McMurtry’s music is a clarion call to the poor and desperate to stop working against their own self interests. And to only take from this song a plangent description of the obvious is to miss the larger message.

“Never maturing beyond the visceral” is not endemic to the south, it occurs everywhere.

I will agree with you, at a certain level.

I don’t know where you’re from, but I’m from the South. I’ve spent most of my life in TN and TX. The people he describes are very prevalent around where I’ve lived, from West TN to East TX.

“Never maturing beyond the visceral” is a white Southern trait. Even for those of us who have made a concerted effort to do so.

I think this old boy is one of the best. He shoots from the hip, and he takes you right down the middle. Good times!

James wrote this song as a way of incorpating all the places he saw touring the Mid west like that Mcdonald’s on the Will rogers turnpike.

jonnytx you’re right “live in aught-three” is an amazing album. This song is not a celebratory song it is a condemnation. From giving the kids a “little bit a vodka…” to fantasizing about sex with relatives, a line that the audience woos at thus demonstrating the trait mcmurty is condemning, this song is about never maturing beyond the visceral.

I’m from East Texas, my wife’s people are from West Arkansas. This song describes it perfectly.
I live in North Dakota now. I miss home, but not the meth and the general laziness of people who think that living on disability while chain smoking and popping vicodin, soma, and xanax is normal.
